Packaging Revolution #2

What are the changes in the transportation of fruits and vegetables? Why cardboard boxes are used? What kind of material should be used for packaging? Why glass bottles have disappeared? How did Plastic furniture become so popular?

Change in the transportation of fruits and vegetables

The changes in transportation of fruits and vegetables such as cardboard crates being used in place of wooden crates, etc. Reasons for the above changes are as follow~

Cardboard Boxes protect products during transportation, even though they weigh hundreds of kilos. These pallet boxes not only manage to handle heavy loads but also provide solid advantages to manufacturers and distributors who have to transport and store products on a daily basis, regardless of their size, shape, or weight. The material they are made of – corrugated cardboard – makes Cardboard boxes easy to recycle, and reuse, and makes them cost-efficient.

With time, manufacturers have looked into three aspects of packaging:

  1. Weight and thickness of the packaging material

  2. The effect on the environment of the packaging material

  3. The cost of packaging.

As transportation cost goes up, manufacturers are making the weight of packed material lower per unit, hence cardboard cartons are replacing wooden crates. One additional reason is cardboard boxes are made from waste or recycled paper; on the other hand, trees have to be felled for making wooden crates.

Packaging of Milk

Milk used to be supplied in glass bottles, later in plastic bags and now in tetra-pack and through vending machines.

Tetra packs are not breakable like glass, they are also an aseptic form of packaging that can store milk for longer periods of time without getting spoiled. Vending machines store plenty of milk, which can cater to a lot of people; installation of these machines has also removed the packaging cost altogether.

Glass bottles almost disappeared because of these 2 reasons:

  • Supermarkets have squeezed down prices paid to farmers and manufacturers for years while increasing mass production to satisfy customers' weekly shops. To ensure they could sell milk as competitively as possible and cheaper to produce, plastic bottles became the norm. They were also lighter than glass packaging and suffered from fewer breakages making them perfect for the high volumes of milk sales supermarkets began to enjoy.

  • The second and related reason is the shift in buying habits. As more people shopped at supermarkets for their weekly needs, milk delivery services began to experience fewer customers. Our busy lives have led to more convenience shopping at all hours of day and night. The idea of always remembering to put out old glass milk bottles and collect fresh ones at a set time each day for many is no longer actually convenient.

Plastic Furniture

Plastic furniture [doors and stools] is gaining preference over wooden furniture.

Plastic doors and windows are lighter and last long, unlike wooden ones which get spoiled due to sun and rain. The use of plastic for making doors and windows also does away with the wanton felling of trees for wood.

Nowadays, Plastic furniture is a basic requirement, whether it’s for our home patio, workplace, or even places such as restaurants. Furniture is basically made of three types of material: plastic, wood, and metal. Furniture made from plastic is not only cheap but it has other kinds of benefits associated with it too, like high-quality plastic furniture, which is not only long-lasting but elegant in looks as well.

The following are the advantages of using plastic furniture

  • No need for Maintenance

  • Eco-friendly: Most of the plastic furniture is made up of recycled plastic and it also can be recycled again

  • Affordable Yet Stylish

  • Mobility

  • Long-lasting

  • Waterproof and safe

Very Well Written!!! I mean I couldn't have thought this deeply about packaging. I totally agree with the fact that we should definitely use glass bottles instead of plastic for sure....but don't you think it will be a bit more on the expensive side and also glass bottle are very fragile, but again as you said it is certainly a better alternative than plastic bags.

Amazingly written..I love reading all your posts!! Keep it up:))))
